PENCIL TOPICS

OCTOBER 2017

WILL ALL READERS PLEASE NOTE

This is the OLD version of the topics web site.

It has been archived here at www.colouredpenciltopics.co.uk

as it contains old tutorials and charts no longer included in the new build of the site. This site is no longer updated

A listing of a wide collection of other sources of teaching

both in the UK and beyond

I include here a series of LINKS to other web sites with useful information for the CP artist - whether a beginner or one more experienced.  If you are aware of other sites, please let me know and I will include where appropriate.

The CPSA  - The Colored Pencil Society of America

I have asked the CPSA several times if they wish to provide any additional information for readers of this site and I have had no replies to my enquiries

Ann Kullberg has an extensive website and there is a  link from

there to her monthly Internet magazine, which is well worth the

annual subscription.

Ann is probably one of the top portraitists working in CP and has

a lot of advice for those developing skills in both portraiture of

human and animal subjects.

She authors books and produces a variety of aids to improve

CP techniques

Ann’s website is the access point to her books, CDs and DVDs

and a variety of CP kits.

The ‘Color’ magazine was founded in 1999 and used to be called

 ‘Ann Kullberg’s Colored Pencil Magazine

( previously CP Magazine), and in August 2015 was

renamed ‘Ann Kullberg’s Color,  A Colored Pencil Magazine’

This is due to another publisher trademarking the title ‘Colored

Pencil’ for magazine title use.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EXCELLENT MONTHLY READ,

Ann Kullberg’s on - line edition of her magazine is a ‘must’.

The back editions are a great fund of knowledge from some

Superb CP artists.

There is also the comprehensive source of Coloured Pencil Websites and Blog information, which was hosted by Ann Kullberg in

Coloured Pencil Central       This directory of CP information is now closed to new contributions, and only updated from time to time, However, the details of a wide range of International  artists websites shown there is still very useful.  The image below provides a link.

Alyona Nickelsen Author of the Coloured Pencil Painting Bible, offers tuition through her USA based website  www.brushandpencil.com.  There are step by step examples of her work there as well as a gallery of her work.

And in the UK,

Katherine Tyrrell’s website, which links to several useful sites she has written

Thecsc.co.uk   This is now operated by Alpha Artshop Online, from Somerset UK.

The website promotes all the various products marketed by Tim Fisher, and sells Fisher 400, an Internationally respected grit paper for Pastels and Coloured Pencil and the site has several video tutorials which are worth seeing

A good source of information about other Coloured Pencil artists in the United Kingdom

are the listings and galleries and many links on :

www.colouredpencilart.co.uk

A web site run by Jo Goudie,  which is well worth looking at

There is also the web site of Robin Borrett from Nottinghamshire  UK

who is a founder member of the UKCPS as well as a Signature member of the Society

This is well worth a look. http://www.artistandillustrator.co.uk/

WEB SITES WHICH HAVE USEFUL COLOURED PENCIL CONTENT which you may be interested to look at

Over the years there have been a number of forums that have supported Coloured Pencil artists and they have been a great help with advice and helpful comments and ideas.  The great forum that introduced me to Coloured Pencil techniques, Scribbletalk, is no more.  Most forums now tend to reside within Facebook as closed forums in an effort to manage costs. This means that you have to apply to join and only those registered can see the postings.  Facebook is not ideal as it does not enable threads on different subjects to run side by side.

An excellent place to look on Facebook for support with CP media, is the Colored Pencil Artists and Lovers Facebook Group ( CPAL) .  A  closed group within Facebook, but very welcoming and you can apply to join if you are already a Facebook member.

Many top CP artists take part and some lovely CP artwork is on show.

The traditional ‘multi threaded’ forum site is very costly to run these days, and usually depends on commercial sponsorship

One of these still exists,  www.wetcanvas.com  which is based in the USA and owned by a major US Art Publisher F+W publishing who run the USA based ‘Artists Magazine’ as well as publishing North Light Books.  The scope of the Wet Canvas site is vast and has  a host of worldwide members.  It does have an active Coloured Pencil section, though, and does provide a facility for Internet based students to discuss CP.  I understand that Wetcanvas has over 300.000 members.

Members of the UK Coloured Pencil Society have the ability to join a closed forum within Yahoo Groups, where CP matters are discussed.     You need to be a fully paid up member of the UKCPS, and arrange for your name to be included in the group by contacting the group administrator.  As a member of UKCPS you will have details in your quarterly magazine.

There is an active french language forum for CP artists at http://crayonsdecouleur.forumactif.com/forum

Otherwise I don’t know of any other discussion groups outside Blogs

Let me know if you find any that are helpful forums or discussion groups to join

WORLDWIDE FORUMS and INTERNET SOURCES for DISCUSSION

There are some USA based web sites which provide a range of information on Coloured Pencils and their use.

Alyona Nickelson introduces a (paid for) tutorial scheme ‘Art Logistics’ through her web site at www.brushandpencil.com.

There is also the excellent source of information supplied in the Colored Pencil Studio site ( based in Texas). Both of these sites provide useful tutorials from major US based artists and will be very helpful to US based readers.

And there is also Rob Sloan’s set of pages featuring free information on brands and techniques through Ebay information pages

These have been establish many years and are regularly updated

Find them at :
